Does an efficient job. Just wish they would make accomodations for infrequent readers.
World renowned journalism with an unbeatable deal (free) for students.
Its functional--its a newspaper, after all. Ads at the bottom of the screen are annoying especially since were paying for a subscription.
The names of each section tab (pinned) take up too much room! The app used to display several making it easy to pick a different one rather than scrolling over and over to get to one. Needless blank space has been added after the names and "Speaking of Science" is still too long. The underlining of the current section name is effective, but it makes it look as if its a link to click. Why not color the background of the name of the current section --say, a pale blue? Or, color the letters to, say, a green or blue? The Pin symbol is creepy! Switch to a heart for favorites--or, give the user some options of which symbol to use. In fact, its a waste of space! It does nothing and we know which actions are there. Putting all the sections into one long scrolling list in he drop down menu doesnt work very well. The down arrows are confusing -- they should be next to each section heading name, not on their own line after four are showing. One taps and suddenly the list is long and theres no immediate way of closing the expanded list. All this should be put under the pin not the drop down menu. YOU STILL HAVENT FIXED THE HERKY-JERKY SCROLLING ACTION. You remain about the only app that doesnt know how to do this smoothly--which is ridiculous as its built into Apples APIs. (If you dont get what I mean, simply finger push the headlines up the page-- that should move them smoothly until the page comes to a stop. Instead, it stutters! See below for more on that.) The section bar should be opaque, NOT translucent -- now, a storys text and photos appears behind the section names, making the bar look dirty. Subscriptions are still too pricey. Its out of your hands, I know, but having ads even after subscribing is just plain greedy. At least you all preserved Saved Stories through this update unlike the last several times! ------------ PREVIOUS UPDATE WARNING: Update deleted ALL saved articles! Scrolling still glitchy. What a disaster! The first rule of programming, like that of medicine, should be first do no harm! Deleting peoples saved articles is no way to endear yourselves to your users or customers! 2nd big issue: the herky-jerky motion when scrolling on the iPad. As you slide up, it stutters-- unlike virtually all other apps. We use the iPhone version on the iPad because its interface is so much better (sections tabs across the top, more text-based, etc.). The iPad version is more magazine style, photo based. Prior review: Sadly, they’ve ruined a great app! It stopped updating Top Stories and pricey subscriptions are required. Bezos has gotten greedy! Here are the details: 1. For more than a week, the Top Stories list has refused to update. Making it worse, it is frozen on a day after the newspeople were killed on the air, so we must continue to see the photos related to it. The Post has provided NO explanation of what is going on, yet bizarrely, all other sections continue to update properly and are current. This needs to be fixed!! Tip: On more recent devices, just upgrade to the latest version of the app-- thats possible on the old one. 2. The subscription changes are an irritating morass. About a year ago, we received a FREE unlimited digital access subscription because we work at a school. Now, we find that reading of stories is blocked and a pop-up demands that we subscribe. We have no problem paying to subscribe, although the following issues remain a) the Post should have contacted education subscribers to let them know the change was coming (or alerted us via the app itself) b) the Post should have made clear that they had decided to *drop* the education program and offered an explanation (they still should), and c) the $14.99 per month is truly outrageous. 3. Adding insult to injury, previously saved stories have vanished! We had scores of them. Thats truly bad programming and inattention to users. 4. Ages ago, they were in Documents where they could be backed up to our computer for safe-keeping and reading. After some hunting, I found they seem to be in Caches and Images. (For those familiar with news apps, its smart to back up saved stories or favorites as they often vanish with updates and are sometimes not even backed up via iTunes; backing up manually is good insurance.) 5. In any event, we tried installing the latest version on our older iPhones (an iPhone 4, which still works like a charm). No dice! Understandable that the latest version wouldnt work on iOS 6 device. Yet, the latest viable app that does download (2.4.1) did NOT solve the problem of failing to update Top Stories. Come on, Post, fix this! 6. Maybe someone else can figure out which file in the app is freezing the date at August 26, 2015. Disk Aid or Imazing could then make short work of it. All these travails raise a series of questions: 1. If we subscribe, what guarantee do we have that the older version of the app will even work? 2. Are there ads even *after* you subscribe? At $15/month (which really should be about the $8 of the NY Times and Netflix), there better hadn’t be *any* ads whatsoever. Hope people can report on that! 3. Has greed trumped news gathering and dissemination? And user-friendly app models? Thanks a lot, Bezos! Makes us believe all the more the recent New York Times story on how demeaning and controlling Amazon is run!
Good but not great. Pales in comparison to the New York Times. Navigation is harder and more confusing.
First-rate app. Great newspaper. App very well done.
Was a good app to follow my football team. Now they want to charge you for it. Just seems wrong. USA today is still free. I am deleting Washington Post app now. I will find my Redskins news somewhere else for free!
I subscribed to WP for news not opinion. For months it seems I was reading a publication consistently bent on engaging anti-Trump readers. Ive canceled my subscription to find a more neutral - substantive over opinion driven news source.
Usually pretty quick to update
Nice interface, though I use the website from a computer more its great for live election reporting.
Great app.
Excellent source of federal news
If you want to still read The Washington Post for free.Go to The Post site. On the front page is a link to down load Thor anonymous web browser. The Post wants you to down it so you can contact them with news leaks via email anonymously. But it also will allow you to access The Post for free.
Great and useful app. World class news, friendly interface and I actually use it regularly. Not as cool as the iPad app, but it travels better on my iPhone.
Clear, easy to read, customizable
This has been at times a great newspaper, and the app used to offer broad access to its articles. Now, however, it is gated, making it less accessible and thus, for me, less useful.
Ive been a Post subscriber for 37 years, read it growing up for 16 years before that, and am being generous by giving it 3 stars. New stories go up on the app much later than on the website, many stories and most columns from sports, local news, and entertainment sections cant be found in the app at all, and the site personalization features are very limited. A discouragingly inferior app.
Great source for news. I look forward to reading it everyday. Wish it at times was more objective in evaluation of our elected officials and not so supportive of a liberal agenda. It needs to hold ejected officials accountable.
We still subscribe to the print version, but cant always read it all at breakfast, and certainly cant while traveling. This app nicely fills in the cracks and incidentally permits sharing the occasional gem with a friend. Even after some lamentable shrinkage in editorial staff, this remains one of the two best papers in the nation. Live long and prosper. The recently added banner that enables the user to automatically load and later access his/her favorite sections is a welcome addition. The ability to download the content on wifi and access it later when no cell or wifi signal is available is a real boon to travelers. Keep it up.
